I read the report it says as a summary: "Overall, the document presents an approach that addresses each of the potential exposure pathways of concern (direct contact with contaminated soil, ground water). Use of the area for a park, if constructed as described, should not pose a threat to public health. However it is important that site conditions (e.g., vegetative cover, no erosion along river, no buildings with major below-ground space or footings) be maintained in the future. Any significant change in site conditions or use could potentially create a complete exposure path in the future." This area is owned by the Park Board. It is defacto Parkland. It is vegetated greenspace that the neighbors want to augment with native plants. >From Mike Mosedale's article in the City Pages Sept. 7 "But Marie Hauser says she has some "concerns" about the possibility of converting the isolated parcel into parkland. "It's on a slope, so it's not in an ideal location for a park," Hauser says. Hauser also questions its suitability because of concerns about pollution at the site, which was formerly home to a coal gasification facility." Again, I don't understand why there is resistance to restoring and enhancing the natural features of this bluff. I would also note that the one true river gorge on the Mississippi has been listed in the top ten most beautiful natural wonders in the United States. The gorge is a slope and has been preserved as parkland in Seward and Longfellow. The fact that it is a slope adds to the efficacy of the citizens proposal.
