This is a real question and not a rhetorical one about why a federal
agency is involved in what seems like pretty local corruption
investigation. The past bribery and corruption cases involving
Minneapolis city government and the current one involving another
council member have, if memory serves, apparently all been conducted by
the FBI. I'm curious why the FBI is involved since none of them
apparently involve a "federal" issue. Nor does it seem to be a problem
of accusers believing that investigators and prosecutors in the same
jurisdiction won't go after persons in their own government. Hennepin
County is not the same jurisdiction and I doubt that its investigators
and prosecutors there would shy away from going after city officials.
Note: I'm not arguing that there is something illegitimate or illegal in
the FBI's involvement. It's more a matter of wondering whether the feds
have bigger fish to fry elsewhere.
