dennis:

"Delmonico is the union president for the police employees of the City of
Minneapolis, the overwhelming majority of which DO NOT live in the City of
Minneapolis. What exactly is the vested interest that's being expressed so
adamantly and who benefits? What happens when the best interests of the
residents (of Minneapolis) conflict with the primary interests with the Police
Federation? Who's interests become subjugated?"

I reply:

Having more officers on the street is a benefit to the police: they are able to
do their jobs more safely and effectively.

Having more officers on the street is a benefit to the residents of
Minneapolis: less crime.

What is the conflict?
