Dear Friends:
I just got off the phone with Farheen Hakeem. She left me a message at Noon
today saying that a Somali man that has identified himself to her as a long
time friend of Peter McLaughlin and a McLaughlin staff member is campaigning
in the Somali community in Cedar-Riverside telling voters not to vote for
Farheen Hakeem because she is a lesbian and therefore not a true Muslim.
Farheen herself heard this invidiual saying these things and she confronted
him. He said that it is now time to play dirty. Farheen Hakeem is a long
time ally to the LGBT community. She has worked tirelessly on our behalf and
has done much advocacy work within the local Muslim community to work
against heterosexism and homophobia. That a McLaughlin staff member would
attempt to use homophobia as a tool to discredit Farheen is reprehensible.
This type of campaign tactic is irredeemable and does nothing but cause pain
and destruction within the Somali Muslim community.
Farheen spoke with McLaughlin's campaign, which has said that they know
nothing about this individual that he is not affiliated with their campaign.
I find that hard to believe.
Is this the type of individual that we want running our city? HECK NO!
Please call the McLaughlin staff immediately and have them address this
situation. Tell your votes and go out and VOTE GREEN!
