Eric Mitchell says: After all the things that were/are constantly said about
Jackie on this list, the only time she stepped in was to set that person
straight that you are speaking of is when he brought her husband into this and
accused him of representing massage parlors and
strip joints and possibly owning stake in them. As you put it, it not only
brought a 'disgusting
personal tone' but, it was a complete lie. So I'm sure you can understand,
after all four years later you find that almost exact thing nasty and
disgusting. Eric Mitchell St Paul(5Th Ward last go round)
My thoughts are this:
1) Don Samuels did not pull Travis Lee in to this, Travis inserted himself into
the nastiness that spews from Natalie's campaign several months ago when he
began to use his porn magazine to campaign for Natalie and campaign against
Don, tactics which include a re-occuring column written by a fake named person
that is full of mis-truths as well as a political cartoon with race-baiting
captions.
2) I find it extremely ironic that 4 years ago, Natalie's campaign was accusing
Cherryholmes' husband of being involved in the sex industry, or whatever...
cause currently, a downtown strip club named Augie's is both an advertiser in
Natalie's husband's porn magazine AS WELL AS a financial contributor to
Natalie's campaign
TN: These are my thoughts:
1.) The magazine to which you are referring is NOT a porn magazine, but even if
it were, Larry Flint (of Hustler) frequently contributes to Democratic
candidates. Whatever your views may be, this genre IS protected by the first
amendment and only the RELIGIOUS RIGHT wants it completely banned and has a
problem with it's complete existence. Perhaps you and Don Samuels agree with
the ideological aims of the religious right, I don't know.
Also, (never having seen the magazine or the articles in it) how do you know
that the person who wrote articles is fake. For all you know, maybe I'm fake.
As to Travis Lee's inserting himself in to the campaign, he has EVERY RIGHT to
campaign for his wife!!! That doesn't give Samuels the right to personally
attack members of Council Member Johnson-Lee's immediate family.
Neither NJL nor any of her supporters have brought CP Samuels family in to
this. It's still ugly. It's still nasty.
A public official who behaves in this way during the course of a campaign can
also behave this way in office (i.e., dig in to and distort the personal lives
of their constituents and intimidate them when the official doesn't like what
the constituents have to say.) It shows the personal views and the character
of CP Samuels. It shows how far he'll go.
2.) The list member about whom we're talking (the one who Cherryhomes
threatened, yes threatened) had no position on Natalie Johnson-Lee's campaign
and if fact had some ideological differences with NJL.
3.) There are a lot of working class lower income folks, not just in the 5th
ward, but all over Minneapolis for whom NJL works very hard, and not just
people of color....she works hard for cab drivers, people who've been abused by
those in power, people who can't figure out how to navigate the maze at City
Hall, all those folks at the Hard Times which the Cherryhomes council tried to
shut down...and there so many others. I am one of those people.
Neither Don Samuels nor his supporters are able to fight this purely on
ideological grounds. If they did, they'd loose because their ideology is
primarily anger and resentment
It's obvious to me that the supporters of the former president who are now
supporting Don Samuels resent US for getting the little bit of representation
we got in 2001.
They believe we have no right to representation at City Hall and they can't
wait to disenfranchise US again.
The blatant hostility of some people working on the Samuels campaign (and it
seems Samuels himself) towards anyone who disagrees with their views is plainly
obvious. Fortunately (one would hope,) the majority of the 5th ward, as well
as the rest of Minneapolis is much more tolerant.
