I winced at the Branch III debate when I heard the
Mayor's assertions that he had backed the Pilot
Outreach Project for homelessness passed under the
Public Safety Omnibus Bill. As one of 4 people who
was there from day 1, nothing could've been further
from the truth. I winced at the introduction of
our 10 year plan to end long-term homelessness
2 1/2 months before the elections--something we
had been shooting for for a long time (seeking to
join the 100 + Cities who had long since fielded
Long-Term plans). I winced at assertions of support
for veteran's housing---can't find any folks on
the Southside or with the vets service organizations
who would concur. I am now wincing over the break-
down in the Police Community Relations Council and
the very real possibility of the return of a Federal
Mediation team. Panic and desperation is setting in
alright, but I think the campaign experiencing said
emotions currently occupies City Hall. I would think
that the fact that at the last PS & RS review of
the PCRC and the implementation of the Federal
Mediation Agreement would've illustrated a very
sharp dissatisfaction quite well...if leaders of
the Latino community were such happy campers, why
were some of them sitting in the audience that day,
far from satisfied with the Mayor's performance?

"Desperation has really started to set in with
Commissioner McLaughlin. He no longer simply
distorts Mayor Rybak's record, he now tells complete
falsehoods. Tonight Commissioner McLaughlin told a
Radio Rey audience that Mayor Rybak did not support
the separation of the police and Immigration
Service in dealing with immigrant communities. Well,
nothing can be further than the truth. Mayor Rybak
has been a passionate and vocal advocate for the
separation and has spent countless hours in churches,
at community meetings and inside City Hall working to
maintain the separation.
Does Commissioner McLaughlin really think this kind of
politics is a winning strategy?
