The Park Boards web-site is about as wrong as the Park Board is for not building a building at the East Phillips Park. The Boys and Girl's Club is at 11th Avenue and 24th Street. That is about 1/2 mile from East Phillips (cockroach) Park. Perhaps Steve should go down and check it out.

Speaking of the Boy's and Girl's "pool & Gym' built on the site of the old Phillips Junior High --- The neighborhood fought long and hard to keep the City from tearing down that Pool and Gym. In fact after winning the battle to keep it from being torn down, out of spite the City killed the neighborhood organization and replaced it with the Muddy Waters project that resulted in the City of Minneapolis creating the old corrupt "People of Phillips" organization that it took ten years to finally die from its own corruption.

The joke really was on the Neighborhood. The Boys and Girl's Club was actually used by many, many of the neighborhood's children from diverse backgrounds when first opening and having Roger Keller direct the kid's programs. There were about 1/3 Black children, about 1/3 White children, and about 1/3 Native and other children. After Roger left the Club gradually became the turf of young gang bangers who threatened the other children for coming until only they were left. Unfortunately, the facility is no longer one that is identified positively in the Community. Too bad, and a real loss for the community. Hopefully the Park Board and the Boy's and Girl's Club will one day change management, so that the Pool and Gym can once again be considered a community center where all children are free to come to. Until then it is a dismal failure and a model of the futility of what can happen with the "Ward Privilege" fiasco that City Council Members engage in.
