Last night after the Lyndale Neighborhood Association monthly General Membership meeting, there was a debate between Ralph Remington and Scott Persons. Any Lyndale resident with burning questions they just had to have answered by either candidate could have attended and satisfied their need to know.

The candidates answered questions about crime, development, NRP, light rail, and opening Nicollet Ave. at Lake Street. Both were well spoken and had a good grasp of the issues.

Among other things, I learned that not only did Mr. Remington start a theater company but he is also a registered educator for HIV-AIDS prevention. Scott Persons was able to recite a variety of recent crime statistics for the area. They debated for over 35 minutes.

Before the debate, moderated by a volunteer from LWV, in our Gen. Mem. meeting, we discussed happenings from the Crime and Drug, Youth and Family and the Environment committees. At the sign up table was some information about funding assistance for home improvements and for improving home energy efficiency.

There was also a half sheet titled, Lyndale Neighborhood Association Profit & Loss Budget vs. Actual. It's similar to the other sheets I've received at the last four or five Gen. Mem. meetings I've attended. It shows Income and Expenses on a month to month basis.

I'm certain that all Lyndale residents would be interested in how the monies of their local neighborhood organization are being spent. I am, that's why I go to monthly meetings. Want to know how much is spent on meeting expenses? Want a copy of the budget? Attend next month's meeting. You can talk to the Executive Director and the other staff that have a legal fiduciary duty to maintain the books.

No police showed up to arrest anyone at the meeting or the debate held afterward. No IRS agents appeared with calculator in hand to conduct an audit. There were no federal agents demanding files be turned over. It was a civil event indicative of local community involvement and problem solving.
