I am interested in any talk of the old Illinois Central Electric commuter
train ("The I.C."), through Chicago's Hyde Park. I have vast experience, and
nostalgia for that elevated, heavy rail transit mode as I rode it for years. It
was excellent and served the purpose of getting commuters to DT Chicago's
Randolph Street and LaSalle Street stations and to Hyde Park/U. of C, from the
South side and south suburbs, and more. That right-of-way (but different
tracks)
was shared with freight and passenger train service to all parts of the
country. The right-of-way had another additional and most unique component,
too. It
shared the electric, heavy rail, overhead mast tracks with the old South Shore
and South Bend Railway ("The Orange Train") which carried commuters and
vacationers from DT Chicago to Gary, Hammond, East Chicago, Michigan City and
South
Bend, Indiana along Lake Michigan.

I mention these details as they are a (now public) transit commuter gold
standard to compare to our little LRT that cost a fortune and serves up not too
much benefit.

I invite further comment with pleasure.

Ray, you know that everything is planned, signed, sealed, delivered and then
it is brought
to the public for three meetings so we can blow off steam and believe we are
part of the
planning and performing an important civic duty!

I would like to see the day when the rail goes beyond the mall and downtown.
I don't
wish to see the day when the rail will be going through areas that look
like Hyde Park or
Oak Park in Chicago. Personally, I feel this will happen along 55 with time
and density.
Looking at the makeup of the neighborhoods, this could happen very easily..
our condo warriors will dispute this of course. Parity in taxes at that
point will be
debatable.
