A little birdie just told me that former MPLS Public Schools Superintendent Peter Hutchinson is going to be running for Governor. I know that folks had mixed feelings about Peter's tenure as superintendent...but there has never been a superintendent before or since that has valued real student participation and input in the school system. Peter was hired during my sophomore year of high school. During high school I was involved with and eventual was president of the Minneapolis Citywide Student Government. During Peter's tenure...the school district opened and funded a Student Activities Office at 807, which included the office for the Citywide Student Government. Students sat on committees throughout the district, including the Superintendents Leadership Council...Peter required that site based management teams at the high schools have active and full participation by students. His office door was always open...and I was always warmly welcomed and listened to...and when Citywide brought issues or concerns to Peter...he acted on them.
This is a little bit of a ra ra for Peter, but I haven't seen the man in 10 years. I received an email today that was addressed to me and four other Citywide alumni from 10 years ago...because Peter remembered us and wanted to know what each of us is doing now. That is a person that really cares about education and the people he serves. I have no idea what the governor's race is going to look like or who the other candidates are going to be...but if the other candidates have half the integrity and commitment to service as Peter...it's going to be one heck of a race that can only mean positive, real choices for Minnesotans. -Brandon Lacy Campos -Albuquerque, NM Brandon Lacy Campos Interim Executive Director YouthAction 505.873.3345 x10 (office) 612.432.7846 (cell) www.youthaction.net [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] My blog... http://itainttruthifitdoesnthurt.blogs.friendster.com/ "Even the smallest person may change the course of the future.." -Galadriel the Elf Queen of Lothlorien REMINDERS: 1.
