Finally!! Someone speaks to the real issue at hand in the DeLaSalle playing
field debate! I applaud you, George Janssen, for your courage and
insight....and agree with you whole heartedly! This debate is about a small group of
priveleged individuals, the island residents, who simply don't want their
private little enclave invaded by these.....kids!
Thank Mr. Kahn for clearing up that misunderstanding. I would point
out, however, that there are two privileged groups, DLS and island
residents. It's an argument among adults in which any kids are just
another brickbat to be flung at each other's heads.
My high school of some 3,000 students didn't have a stadium. It doesn't
to this day. We played a full schedule of football, basketball, and
baseball every year, all at other school stadia and gyms. We even turned
out one national athlete, though only because they let him slide to the
very bottom academically and passed him through. Pete Rose. His dad and
my dad were acquainted. My dad ran a handbook.. Pete was in my English
class one year until it was discovered that he'd been mis-assigned. When
last I checked Books in Print, Pete had, with a ghost writer, produced
two more books than he ever read. My high school classmates sometimes
remarked that it was a good thing he could play baseball or he'd be on
the dole his entire adult life.
