Of course campaign talk is cheap, especially on the
list, and claims about donations to charity are nice
but not particularly relevent. I imagine a good
number of the list members (and Mayor Rybak as well )
would consider themselves significant charitable and
political givers so that's not exactly a
distinguishing feature. But if you have Commissioner
McLaughlin's tax returns handy to demonstrate some
extraordinary quality, please feel free to share them.
On the question of salaries, I'm glad the Commission
took the view that they should not be raising their
own pay when they were holding the line on workers,
both high and low paid. Is this the pattern in prior
budget years? It would certainly make bargaining in
lean times a little easier so I understand that much.
I'm still wondering how the Commisioners' pay is
relative to the range of employees. I've searched the
County website but can't seem to find a list of staff
salaries nor Commissioner salaries, just references to
minutes from meetings where a few classifiactions have
been created or adjusted.
Across the board approaches like the one Nikki Carlson
has highlighted, would certainly favor higher income
employees like the Commissioners and top level
adminstrators and increase the wage gap over time.
I began this thread with a comment about grumblings I
had heard from county workers. I 'm guessing it's the
front-line staff who are probably on the lower end of
the pay scale; service workers, social workers, child
care workers, janitorial staff and others (home health
care?). who may be unhappy about growing disparities.
