Samantha Smart for Minneapolis Library Board!
Cyber-Campaign - final edition
Vote SMART on November 8!
please forward widely!

Friends, neighbors, sisters and comrades!

This is it. Eight months of work will culminate on Tuesday. Why have I
declared myself as a candidate for the Minneapolis Public Library Board and why
should you vote for me on Tuesday?

My experience over the last three years:
witnessing the tremendous effort of the Franklin community to insist on an
alternate site while their library was renovated,
the fabulous commitment and creativity of the Hosmer community in bringing
dynamic programs and vibrant infrastructure to their library,
the decades of work of the Friends of Sumner Library, and
the exuberant grassroots success of my own neighbors in the Nokomis
neighborhood fighting to fund our library on our own...
has taught me that the masses of people love and need their libraries as
intimately as we need the air we breathe and the water we drink. Libraries are
the rock on which our intellectual life stands and can take flight into
creativity and imagination.

To witness the closure of libraries by 35%, the lay-off of 27% of staff, the
alienation of staff from decision-making, the reduction in collections,
acquisitions and programs, over these last three years means to me that our
intellectual lives are confronted with a slow and torturous death.

I am running for this position because I refuse to accept this. I find the
closure of libraries to be completely unacceptable and am willing to go as far
as it may take to reverse this trend and insure the long-term integrity of our
public libraries.  In fact,

I want to go even further and catalyze more exciting programming, in
partnership with community groups, to increase literacy, continuing education
and use of the libraries.
I want to go further and implement the American Library Association's Policy
#61 on removing barriers to poor people
I want to go further and insure that no community library will be closed, but
rather we generate more public funding so that our libraries can be open SEVEN
DAYS A WEEK!
I hope you will support me with your VOTE on Tuesday!
forward ever, Samantha Smart
