We had 7,705 voters turn out in Ward 12 . The election judges said the morning was light in voting but it got wild in the afternoon after work. The voters after work, were mainly new registrants, new to the community. Out of 7,700 voters, Kevin lost by @550 votes for council and Jason lost by 300 votes.
This is a strong showing that the tide is changing even in 12. The incumbents have been in politics for a long time, well intrenched in the DFL party, a wealth of resources at their disposal, and coffers padded by unions and labor. For new young candidates, this is one heavy block to move. Yes, that is politics...seemingly unfair since they have no money, no base, no experience. We have DFLer's running against DFL's. But it is the only way some candidates could get to the finish. This alone makes one believe that our system has problems. How do we get the best people elected? Where are the GOP's, where are the Independent's? Where is the diversity that is needed for true representation for all the people? As the months went by.. Park Reform and Park Watch, for me, became important for information... realizing that some commissioners had been using old bully tactics, I really commend the two groups for keeping notes on what was going on at meetings. Park commissioners represent the city as a whole and should remember, we all wish to be represented with equality and our area is as important as your own. To have won this election is not a given to one's own agenda...winning by 40-100-500 votes means nothing out of thousands of people. It's only a measure, a gift by the people for representation. So shake the tail of that old donkey.. young candidates are coming a board, if not this election...there is always the next. Dorie Rae Gallagher/Nokomis REMINDERS: 1. Be civil!
