Stewart Udall and Matt Simmons recently published an excellent commentary entitled "Time to Discard Fifty Years of Energy Myths" here:
http://www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/103209 Stewart, Randy, and Mark Udall have all been at the cutting edge of leadership who recognize that we approach an energy crisis that will shatter our shared myths rather soon. Udall and Simmons offer a tremendous summary of where we are in terms of energy, and lay out the facts very clearly. They plead for resource conservation at every level, and especially with regard to transportation, which uses over 70% of the petroleum we consume. there is more, but do read the article to get the big picture. Udall and Simmons point out the problem and point the way to solutions. Obviously, the big picture is bleak as people and politicians prefer to hide in the temporary safety of the old energy myths. Looking for hope, I've been reading up on permaculture lately, and see the most sane and optimistic approach here: http://www.holmgren.com.au/ I am interested in developing permaculture in an urban context here in Minneapolis. I invite list members to learn about permaculture (good summary here): http://www.holmgren.com.au/html/Writings/essence.htm Who is currently practicing permaculture in Minneapolis? Are there people or institutions working in a similar way? How can we apply permaculture principles as we develop our urban environment? How can we educate ourselves and others to re-imagine the development of urban infrastructure along these lines? Discard the myths. Let's try to see ourselves and our city with new eyes. -- pedaling from Lynnhurst for now -- Gary Hoover REMINDERS: 1. Be civil! Please read the NEW RULES at http://www.e-democracy.org/rules.
