The argument University Avenue proponents keep making is "ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT". They claim that the I-94 Corridor and existing rail lines don't have the capacity/density to support light rail, (how much commercial activity was and is on Hiawatha and light rail is exceeding all expectations there). They also claim there be "economic development" along the I-94corridor, because it is basically residential. But notice that David Green in his previous post, while making all the wrong arguments for putting Light rail on University Avenue admits that light rail will STOP FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS! The whole point of light rail is to be faster than cars! If light rail has to stop for traffic lights, it becomes subservient to cars, defeating one of the basic reasons of building light rail. Putting light rail down University Avenue is so short-sighted it is shocking. The goal should be, where do we expand the system over the next 15, 20 and 30 years as gas supplies become less and less plentiful and people seek other alternatives. We should be planning to extend the system all the way to Stillwater and Hudson on the east and Shakopee, Wayzata etc. on the west. But how many people in the suburbs will abandon their cars for light rail if they have to wait at every traffic light on University Avenue? Dann Dobson Summit Hill - Saint Paul [EMAIL PROTECTED] Why doesn't the proposed Mpls to St Paul route use existing railroad right of way? with a single stop at the U?
Do we have that much money to burn? Do we need to take more homes? Do we need to have fast trains moving through neighborhoods? I just don't get it. Ed Felien Powderhorn REMINDERS: 1. Be civil!
