I agree that whenever possible we should use existing right of ways.  I think
that the argument for putting the rail near or on existing streets is driven by
the notion that people won't ride the bus to get on the train, even for a short
ways.    While this is true to a degree now, I think it is changing and will
change faster if designed and marketed better.

I also think that more consideration should be given to elevated crossings like
the one at Lake St.  That is working and would work in lots more places and
would likely be worth the extra cost.
