Traffic isn't that bad on Hiawatha. I drive it frequently. The

Bah. The timing on the lights is still terrible, it's just that it's
not as terrible as it was to begin with (has anyone else noticed that
the light on the cross street is still green when the gates are
down?), and people have learned to avoid the worst of it.
I've sat at the light, waiting to turn from Hiawatha to 26th for 10
minutes at a stretch. I've timed it. It happens every time I make the
mistake of going that way instead of turning on Cedar, as I've
learned to do.
Traffic has shifted from Hiawatha to Minnehaha and the River Road,
and through Minneahaha Falls park. That's bad for neighborhoods.
I'm agnostic on this. I love the idea of LRT in the same way some
people love the idea of stadiums for their sports teams. But it makes
no sense. The Pi-Press article yesterday indicated that the capital
costs are 4 times higher than BRT and the annual operations are about
the same.
At least if we're going to do it, and if we're going to do it in the
name of economic revitalization, we should pay something to the
existing businesses that are going to lose business during the
construction period, or worse yet that are going to lose their spaces
(I love Snyder Drug! will they really lose their store?). Paying off
some small businesses would be a drop in the $800 million bucket. But
I guess that's a lot to ask of a project that was willing to cut
corners on traffic light technology.
