Hi Mark/Mitch/Group.. I have read the past couple of posts from you and Mitch regarding MIBS for Ex2K. While Ex2K's support for SNMP is admittedly underdocumented (even the WMI perfmon stuff Mitch was referring to), there is SOME relief for you!
"Out of the Box", Ex2K supports SNMP queries through the SMTP.MIB (attached for you to reveiew), as it can now use the Simple Mail Transport Protocol service that installs as part of IIS. (Be sure to load W2K SP3 as there are some SMTP relaying bugs fixed) The key is whether or not the extension DLL (SMTPMIB.DLL) is loaded. In many cases, the file is there (%SystemRoot%\System32\inetsrv\smtpmib.dll), but the SNMP registry hive has not been updated to load it on startup with the SNMP service. I an also quite sure that there is some support for the Mail and Directory Management Management Information Base (MADMAN MIB)is also supported. Check out RFC-1566 (also attached). It never hurts to load the MIB and try your query. If you are looking to monitor MORE than what you see there, then why not take a look at my little SNMP agent called SNMP4W2K-PLUS. It includes SMTP support, and will modify the registry to load the SMTPMIB.DLL if you tell it to, adds NNTP (news) support as well (through NNTP.MIB and NNTPMIB.DLL) and adds SNMP support for Ex2K performance counter objects, a list of which can be viewed in the PERFMIB.INI file here (bottom of file, between 70 and 81). http://www.snmp4tpc.com/FILES/SNMP4W2K/PLUS/PERFMIB.INI BTW, here are a couple of good articles about Ex2K monitoring... http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodt echnol/exchange/exchange2000/deploy/upgrdmigrate/ex2kupgr/planus/p_07_tt 1.asp And http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodt echnol/exchange/exchange2000/maintain/operate/opsguide/e2kops4.asp Best regards! All the reading I did basically points to Exchange 2000 not having a MIB for this. The MIB you are using looks like Exchange 5.5. I used getif and browsed to that MIB on my Exchange 2000 server. When I poll it there is no data. According to MS you need to use a WMI performance monitor to look at these stats and Exchange 2000 doesn't use snmp. Thanks again Microsoft! Let me know if you come up with anything different.
