In Design view, do you have Text Box controls laid out in your Detail area?
And do those Controls have a Control Source property that points to one of
the fields in the Record Source? I suspect you do because the fields do
show up in Datasheet view.
When you open the outer form in Design View an select the subform control,
what are the settings of the Link Master Fields and Link Child Fields
properties? What is the Record Source of the both forms and how are they
related?

When I switch to single form, the header in the subform shows up,
but no detail lines show up. When I switch to datasheet view, only
detail lines show - the header disappears.
Can you tell me what you mean by "bound controls" on my detail
section?
