Yes, that's what I meant. If the text style dialog specifies both an
above-staff and below-staff offset, it could also have radio buttons to select
which is applied by default when creating new text.
Not sure this part of it should really wait long if we do the first part.
Consider, if we allow lyrics - normally displayed under the staff - to have
both an above staff and below staff offset, wouldn't we want the default to be
below staff? Currently, this is done by making the above staff offset
negative, but if we go to a system where it becomes possible to have separate
above and below staff lyrics, wouldn't we want to actually use the below staff
values by default, so the "flip" operation would actually work to move them?
Of course, I guess that doesn't necessarily mean we need to actually *expose*
this text style option; could be hard coded for now. But for future
compatibility sake, should probably be encoded as part of the text style in the
score file.

I would agree it should stay by default, as it is indeed convenient for many
uses. But I would not be so sure users are all happy about it. We do get a
number of questions of the form, "how come my score fit on 2 pages before I
added lyrics but mow it takes 5", or "how come some of my pages fit 4 systems
but others can only fit 3"? True, if we leave this the default, those
questions won't go away, but at least we could offer users a choice. And in
some publishing contexts, one really does want consistent staff spacing.
But it hadn't occured to me that fiddling with the lyric margins could produce
more evenly spaced staves. Sure enough, a sufficiently large negative value
for lyrics lower margin has the desired effect. So, good. But:

I would have no objection if it were similarly possible to disable this. So
perhaps the equivalent of "lyrics lower margin" could be made a part of text
style. The actual amount of extra space to allocae woild be the max of all
lower margin values for text actually present (ie, the effect would not be
cumulative). Again, Id have no problem with the extra space being allocated by
default, but for conexts where the user prefers consistent staff spacing, it
should be possible to get it.
