As an addendum, I also remember this interesting page from the plugin manual:
http://musescore.org/en/plugin-development/tonal-pitch-class-enum It seems that notes are categorized both by "tonal pitch class" from -1 to 33 and a "midi pitch class" from 0 to 11.
