Hi Craig, and welcome !

I would advise to compile a recent version of MuseScore from our git
repository https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore You can find
compilation instructions here
http://musescore.org/en/developers-handbook/compilation and have a
play with the current staff style facility.

The idea "Alternate notation styles for specified ranges" may be
unclear. The idea is to be able to change some properties of staff for
a given number of measures. These properties can be existing one such
as the number of staff lines, the transposition, eventually the staff
type etc... or non existing ones like slash notation.

Jianpu is something quite different. It could probably be implemented
as a staff type like the current percussion or tablature styles.

I hope it helps, you can keep on discussing here or come on IRC
#musescore on freenode.net if you want to have a live chat.
