Sorry, I forgot to mention: Windows 10.
You're right , the instructions say 5.9.4.  Somewhere I read "get the latest version", and maybe I confused the CMake 3.10.1 with Qt 5.10.1, which is what I'm running now.  I also saw several, recent posts in the Support forum that mentioned Qt 5.10.1, but not as the problem, simply as the platform.

I just opened the Qt Maintenance Tool and an now regressing to 5.9.5.  It takes a while.  What is a LTS release?

The docs <https://musescore.org/en/handbook/developers-handbook/compilation/compile-instructions-windows-mingw-git> are mixed, with the screen shot showing 5.9.3 and the text below telling you to update to 5.9.4, if that matters to you:

...

There is always something that I screw up in these types of installs/updates.  Thanks for the reply, sorry for the bother.  I haven't synchronized to the master in 2 years, and the code sync has been surprisingly easy, but not CMake and Qt.  It's always something.

Currently, master branch is typically built with Qt 5.9.x, a LTS release. Which OS are you using?

CMakeLists.txt has several places where the %{sourcedir}/build/ is
used.  The online documentation says clearly to use build.qtc,
    which I
was using previously.

%{sourcedir}/build is correct and is where build scripts are stored : https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/tree/master/build
It has nothing to do with the directory where the build is stored.
