Well, you might state it so - but I _did_ want something "better" (i.e.
faster) than the VESA framebuffer driver I had installed at first. This
wasn't too bad in terms of display resolution, it even played videos
acceptably, but you could still watch terminal screens being painted line
by line in some cases, one being mc's panel display which I use very
intensely.

The basic X functions all seem to be widely disregarded by now - there was
a discussion on a german linux group about the use of X drawing methods
(synchronous vs. asynchronous) and the impact of networking on them, and
this was talked about even here some time ago. It was found that nearly all
of the "modern" frameworks and toolkits largely ignore the networking
abilities of the X protocol and mainly rely on synchronous drawing, which
makes them nearly unusable over a mediocre network connection, like DSL,
for instance.
