What system setup? As you're using SuSE, I guess you also run KDE?
If so, Martin's remark about timing might be relevant - these humongous
desktop environment facilities consume so much processor time that they
might easily consume all the power of three of your cores (and more),
rendering this machine equivalent to a single core, like my old one, for
the rest of it - MSE-IDE & gdb, in this case, along with the application.

(I_m just running a tiny window manager, openbox, on top of X11, that
doesn't use up a lot of processor power. Most of the time, the load on all
cores lies below 1%, probabely even combined. In fact, I'd not need this
powerful a machine, but it was a "best buy" at the time I needed it
urgently...)
