Not Linux, but more stable... try FreeBSD 11 instead. I run FreeBSD with
JWM. JWM is not a "desktop environment" but install a stand-alone X11
Window Manager. I have no problems with MSEgui. JWM doesn't get in my
way, only uses 4 global keyboard shortcuts. It leaves me to use my
system as I please, which I like.

Obvioly you can run Gnome (aka Mate), Cinnamon, KDE etc too. I have them
installed and working, but I chose to stay with JWM (which only uses
15MB of memory).
