I used to run a Radeon HD 9800 (?) card about 4 years ago, but with the open source ATI/AMD driver. Performance sucked. I then moved over to 100% silent Nvidia card with proprietary drivers. Performance was excellent. Since then I've upgraded my Nvidia card to the GeForce GTK 1060 card (primarily so I can hook up 3 monitors) running the v375.66 (currently) proprietary driver. Again performance is excellent and even hardware video decoding and such works. In fact my exact system dual-booted to 64-bit Win7 doesn't perform as good as FreeBSD does. I ran the same benchmark tests. ATI/AMD doesn't have proprietary drivers for FreeBSD.
