I am setting up some Web Application objects in SCOM and I was wondering what
is the best metric when you want a failure?

For example, I do not want the management interface on my Google Search boxes
available via the load balanced DNS ‘gsvip.domain.com’ but I do want to make
sure it is available on each node ‘gs1.domain.com’ and ‘gs2.domain.com’
directly.

I have the following tests to meet this need:

  1. https://gsvip.domain.com:8443
Error if ‘response time’ ‘is less than’ ‘999 seconds’
  2. https://gs1.domain.com:8443
https://gs2.domain.com:8443
Error if ‘HTTP Result’ ‘is greater than or equal to’ ‘400’
Error if ‘response time’ ‘is greater than’ ‘30 seconds’
Warning if ‘response time’ ‘is greater than’ ‘10 seconds’

So my question is, is there a better way to make sure a site is NOT available
other than checking the response time?
