I am using 64 bit ones, but I have quite a few of these variables. In 
this case RAM consumption *is* an issue.

Overall, I think the non-standard nature of anything but 8, 16, 32, 64 
bit operations is too much of a PITA to justify implementation. However, 
some days you just yearn for a more tailored solution. :-)
