This sounds great.  I've been wondering whether the move to gcc 4.x was
going to be coming soon, especially as you haven't been following the
later
3.x lines.  There are a fair number of interesting improvements in gcc
4.x,
such as inter-procedural optomisations and unit-at-a-time compiling,
which
(if I understand them correctly) can give you lots of optomisation
oportunities for free.  I'm looking forward to trying the gcc 4.0 (or
4.1?)
port!  Thanks for all your efforts.
