Thanks. I had not seen this patch despite looking for it - I guess
I'm still learning my way around the CVS repository.
Looks like there are two patches relevant to binutils-2.18.
Should I also apply the binutils-ld_scripts.patch? It's against
binutils-2.17 but there is no 2.18 equivalent in the repository.

Seems like you have built binutils without last patch -
binutils-ld_scripts.patch from packaging/patches directory of mspgcc
cvs
repository.
