Hi Steve,

I've tried this on a variety of Linux systems, and I did notice that
it doesn't work unless the kernel version is sufficiently recent
(2.6.30ish -- can't remember the exact version).

I have it working on my laptop with Linux kernel 2.6.34, and ser2net.
It's also working on the same system with minicom, but I've found
that ser2net is often much easier to get going.
