One limit might be that many (most?) MSP430 are not DIP design, and thus cannot be attached to the Launchpad without some kind of adapter. I seem to recall having read somewhere that the G series was one of the very few (only?) that was distributed in DIP format. It would be interesting to request some samples and do this testing. My experience with mspdebug is that it is very strong and flexible, and so far doesn't seem to really care about what "include" chip .h I set. Maybe it does indeed manage to handle things beyond its documented abilities...
