There is no technical limitation for support of non-g devices with the Launchpad. But the intention of the Launchpad was to support the low cost g-devices (Value Line). The Launchpad was not tested for functionality with other devices then Value Line. Now we are thinking about how we can address all other devices with the Launchpad, but there are no fixed plans so far. The Launchpad has the devices' data base for more MSP430 devices then the Value Line. But it was not tested on other devices and TI doesn't guarantee it works with other devices. So it may looks like even the device was recognized by the Launchpad, but the debugging or the programming of the device is unstable, or doesn't work at all.
