Hopefully that won't apply to anyone else.  I have never heard of placing the 
Site Server and SQL on one machine with the SMS Provider on a remote system!!!  
While this is technically a valid configuration, the SMS Provider should be 
either on the site server or the SQL Server for best performance.  Since both 
of those components are on the same box, one would logically have placed the 
SMS Provider on the same machine.

No wonder they had problems!
