I would not be in Houston without a car.
NOTHING is walking distance in Houston. we are a car society. if the
convenience store was a quarter mile from your house, a Houstonian would drive.
They would not even consider walking.
that being said, a 6 block walk downtown is no problem at all and to be
expected no matter what you do or where you stay.
A block in downtown is like 1 or 2 buildings. a block outside of downtown could
be a mile or more. There are a lot of people walking in downtown. Once the sun
sets, you will not see ANYONE downtown, cannot find anything to eat, nothing
except bars on main street where the baby train stops.

So you recommend using them? Best alternative?
Or stay at the airport and rent a car?

there are no lines for our trains. nobody really rides them. they go
from downtown to reliant stadium past the med center. more or less
empty at all times. nice benches at all the stops.

If you were talking about Metro for Windows 8, the line wouldn't be
that long.

Googled TMC J, Texas Medical Center.

Best Western is about 120 a night.

How long for the metro line then? Aren't they stuck in the same traffic?

There's still some hotels available down by the TMC that are, what I
could consider reasonably priced. Plus, they are 1-2 blocks from the
Metro line.
I go to a conference every year in Houston where the attendance is
60K+ over the course of 4 days. Logistically, I don't think there's
ever been any issues. $6 cab rides within the loop, $3 daily Metro
fare. Does it add up over the week - of course. For me, it's the
benefits that I get from the conference that far outweigh the
inconvenience of riding the metro or taking a cab.

With MMS, I was never lucky enough to stay at the conference hotel or
anywhere near, so I always had to take a cab and/or the monorail, but
at least I was able to attend.....

Assuming airbnb isn't working out, as I just asked about one and the

A distant hotel and getting stuck in traffic twice a day?

How bad would that be?

Never was in Houston (or Texas), but you're saying it's bad choice in
the first place?

Honestly, if TechEd was in another place that's not logistically
retarded for these type of events I might of gone. My team and I are
going to give IT/Dev connections a shot this year. Hopefully we get
similar value to MMS.
I know this isn't helpful to this thread. Just venting, again. :)

Yeah, all the airbnb stuff close to the hotel listed by "Kozi
Corporate Housing" is only for month long stays. They advertise 5
day minimums, but if you aren't booking a month they will only let
you book at the last second.

I think that area is fine. I was looking an apt there and a co-worker
did end up getting one there. There's a free bus that runs in the area.

Still not sure if I want to go, but if I do, I figured that the
hotels listed with the convention are already booked or too expensive or both...

But an apartment within the yellow line here should be ok right?

The distance is rather close, around 1 mile, so walking could be ok
to, right?

If people walk in Houston J

Otherwise it's a really short cab drive or maybe bus ride?
