I've been wondering the same, shying away from having SCCM provision them for 
this reason and probably won't be using AD with them to avoid any device name 
confusion.

When doing out of band management via CM what's the purpose of the machine 
accounts that are created in AD? They are the same as the real accounts but end 
in $me. I just enabled OOB today. Now when I run a query for something like ARP 
data the funky computer name shows instead of the real one.
