The Microsoft Azure platform is retiring Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2
(SP2) as a guest operating system. When you install a Cloud Distribution
Point in Configuration Manager 2012 R2, the operating system used by the
guest instances is Windows Server 2008 SP2.

Will the ConfigMgr 2012 R2 Cloud Distribution Point role be affected by this
Azure platform change? If so, will there be a hotfix to update the .cspkg
file included in the contentwebrole.cab file? Is it supported to manually
change the operating system family of the Azure Cloud Service that hosts the
Cloud Distribution Point role?

I've attached the announcement about the retirement of Windows Server 2008
SP2.

Cheers,

Trevor Sullivan

Microsoft Azure Guest OS Family 1 has been retired. Upgrade now to avoid any
disruption in service.

Effective June 2, 2014 the Azure Guest operating system (Guest
OS) family 1.x based on the Windows Server 2008 operating system has been
retired. We will provide customers additional time until September 2, 2014 to
migrate services running on family 1.x to a supported OS family. After that
date, you will no longer be able to manage or create new deployments of Cloud
Services on Guest OS family 1.x. To avoid any service disruption, move off OS
Family 1.x as soon as possible. For more information on the retirement plan,
please visit the Guest OS Family 1 Retirement

  website.

As of May 21, 2014 the deployment IDs noted below are still running on Guest OS
Family 1. If you have deployed any new services on or after May 21, 2014, it
may not be reflected below.

Your Cloud Services are affected if any one of the following applies:

  • You have osFamily = “1” explicitly specified in the
ServiceConfiguration.cscfg
<http://click.email.microsoftemail.com/?qs=5f224333833a64f21ba0b514e7500b6f7f83a91e8ac056eaf80485b77a325c11a23835a2e8812f6c>
  file.

  • You do not have the osFamily setting in the ServiceConfiguration.cscfg
<http://click.email.microsoftemail.com/?qs=5f224333833a64f2dbe4391c867782fe1956f28b19d7374547ddc187f67ba7b9bc0db210657e94f8>
file, thus using the default Guest OS of Family 1.

  • The Azure Management Portal view of your service shows Windows Server
2008 SP2 as the operating system.

For more information on how to find this setting, visit the Determine the
Current Guest OS of your Cloud Service

website. You can also use Azure Powershell to identify the OS families that
your deployments are using by following the instructions at Guest OS Family 1
Retirement

  website.

These are our recommended supported Guest OS families:

  • Guest OS family 4.x based on Windows Server 2012 R2 (recommended)

  • Guest OS family 3.x based on Windows Server 2012

  • Guest OS family 2.x based on Windows Server 2008 R2

We also suggest you use an explicit value for the osFamily attribute in the
ServiceConfiguration.cscfg file to refer to a supported Guest operating system
family.
