Like Daniel said, use a VM for building your reference image. Then you import
your drivers into ConfigMgr so that the appropriate drivers are injected
dynamically during the TS. If you capture an image with drivers in it and need
to update to a new driver for a particular device you would have to recapture
your base image.

There are several philosophies on OSD with regard to using a base image, a
hybrid image or a thick image.
A base image would more or less just be the OS with updates injected/captured.
A hybrid image would likely add software that is common to all machines like
plugins and viewer/players, while a thick image would contain installed
software like Office, AutoCad, etc.

A thick image can be quicker to deploy but requires more maintenance and with
larger images takes longer to build and capture, etc. Hybrid images balances
things out a bit more where you have software installing during the Task
Sequence this gives you flexibility to make changes to what the end result of
image process looks like without having to do another build/capture each time,
the deployment time will likely be a bit longer. A base OS image would
obviously then have all software installing during the TS and take a bit longer
still.

As to which method you should use, the answer to that is: It depends. You have
to figure out for your environment what an acceptable, image deployment time is
versus the difficulty of maintaining your images. Real world example, we use a
base image with just windows updates, .net installed (plus updates) and deploy
everything else during the TS, including Office 2010. Our image deployment
times are well under an hour (about 30-40 min on average). This is sufficient
for a staging area building 100+ machines per day.

Well, In my particular case.. I’m kind of hoping for that.. I have several
of the same make/model laptops, and my hope was to get a single “reference”
image made for them, so I can copy to the rest of them, hopefully speeding up
deployment. Then if I need to re-image one.. I Have a starting point. The
theory was to get one setup with the required software, and up to the current
patch level.. but I’m also rather new to imaging and OS deploying options, so
if I’m barking up the wrong tree, feel free to point out errors in my plans! ☺

I would also add that you need to use a VM to build your reference image. Think
about all the drivers that are baked into your image because you are using
physical hardware.

Make sure your boot image you selected has been distributed to a DP.

Subject: [mssms] Distribution point questin

Hello, I am trying to get a OS setup captured from a reference laptop I setup,
and was attempting to do a task sequence to capture the media

When I get to the part for selecting the Distribution point, I have no options
available to choose, so I’m assuming I’ve missed something the SCCM setup for
the distribution points (I only have 1 distribution point to choose), and it is
working fine with all the other items I’m pushing out.

Anyone want to show me what I may have missed?
