Read somewhere on those interwebs that SCCM 2012 needed SQL2012sp1 for install 
and then I could update after.

Kind of. Yes, it must be 64-bit; however, each SQL Server 2012 SP level has a 
different CU minimum:

-          RTM is CU2

-          SP1 is no CU

-          SP2 is no CU

I always recommend (as do others much smarter on SQL Server than I am) to 
install the latest CU available for the SP that you are installing.

Is there a reason you wouldn’t use SP2 though?

Looks like SCCM 2012 just needs the SQL version to be 64 bit.
