Agreed. Stay away from a remote SQL.

We have our SQL hosted in a cluster and it has been a very unpleasant
experience. I can get a test standalone SQL/SCCM box stood up and running in a
few hours, it took 2 months to get everything up and running on our SQL
cluster, but this also includes setting up SQL Reporting services on another
box as SRS can't run in a cluster. Most of the issues we had were with
permissions and certs. Also, every time I want to upgrade SCCM to a new build
I have to get the upgrade account increased permissions to SQL to do the
upgrade. Most of the time the SQL guy and myself need to sit down and do the
upgrade together to get everything to work correctly and not have failures.

Don't put SQL offbox unless you absolutely have to. Usually no pros and
several cons in doing so.

Subject: [mssms] New site installation

We are setting up a new site with ConfigMan CB. Management wants to host the
database on our SQL cluster. Does anyone know if using a CNAME is supported in
the setup wizard when it prompts for database information? Are there any
"gotchas" we should look out for in this kind of setup (SQL cluster)?

Appreciate any feedback...

Thanks,
Kevin
