Have to ask,
Exchange SP2 switched the ability to relay to off-net addresses by rules,
but I'd be surprised if you weren't already at that level.
It is not unlikely that some other patches may have closed relaying. What
SPs and patches have been applied?

what happens when you try to telnet to port 25?
Turn on local echo and telnet to port 25 of the Exchange server.
Issue the following (replacing the addresses with the obviously appropriate
addresses for your situation.)

HELO servername.domain.com
MAIL FROM: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RCPT TO: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DATA
This is a test
.

Note any errors you receive.
Do you get the message?

What version of Exchange?
NT or Win2K?

Are the emails directed inbound to a domain handled by Exchange or off-net
to a pager or some third-party email?
if directed off-net, does the test above work when directed to an address on
the exchange server?

It seems more likely that you've closed an opportunity for mail-relaying
than you've closed the ability for Exchange to accept inbound SMTP. If that
is the case then your best bet will probably be to create Custom Recipients
(CR) for the off-net addresses. Add an internal address to each of these
CRs and alter your jobs to point to the internal addresses.(assuming
Exchange 5.5 here - the process and terminology are different in 2000 but
the principles are the same.)
Alternatively you could just go in and open up whatever is blocking
mail-relay. It is a simple enough solution, but without knowing your
network I can't recommend it. (Basically, if this server is only exposed
internally, then tthere is a switch in the properties of the 5.5 IMS

Subject: Unix - Exchange Question

We have a SCO Unix 5.05 server that sends emails from root regarding various
overnight process with their status at completion. For the past couple
months we have not received any emails from that server and now all
troubleshooting now points to the fact that I cannot telnet into my
NT/Exchange box. Would one of Microsoft's many security patches have closed
telnet access to the server?

Either way, how can I enable telnet access to that server again so email can
flow through to the Exchange server?

Thanks in advance - Brian
