That depends largely on whether you are salaried exempt, or you bill by the
hour. In the first case their stupidity is a waste of your time, in the
second it is just a waste of their money. Assuming you gave appropriate
advice, in a manner which a businessperson should clearly understand - $$$ -
then I have no issues with doing it the wrong way b/c they demanded it.
(There are limits of course - in some cases I would demand a waiver of
liability, and in extreme cases - like businesses that refuse to invest in
even rudimentary backup - I'd walk away.)

Also, as far as MS disagreeing about software RAID - Part of our SOP for
many upgrades is to break the mirror set on the system drive -- Oh yes,
along with assuming hardware RAID I also think a RAID 5 system drive is
wrong. In the course of troubleshooting an issue the MS PSS tech latched on
to that procedure asserting that Mirroring generally didn't work well enough
to fail over to the mirror drive, making such a procedure unreliable. That
was right up until I made him aware that it was Hardware RAID. Apparently
he only felt that MS software RAID was not reliable enough to fail over to
the mirror.

amen.
but no matter what in the end you do what your employer wants no matter
how bad it could be.
you just have to hope in the long run you don't have to say I told you
so...

It goes back to the old, there's a right way, a wrong way, and the
Microsoft
way. Just cause its in a book doesn't mean it's the right way, just that
it
is the MS way.

While I agree with the fact that MS has their own answers, it most
definitely doesn't mean it's the right answer. Knowing about software
RAID
is one thing, using it in a production environment is completely
another.

I agree with all of the comments about software redundancy. However I am
sure Microsoft would definitely beg to differ. If you want to be an MCSE
in
2000, don't overlook software RAID, the Server test likes to ask
questions
about it.
