you might try using netdom.exe from the resource kit.
NETDOM /Domain:mydomain /user:mydomainuser /password:apassword MEMBER
mycomputer /JOINDOMAIN
NETDOM /Domain:mydomain MEMBER mycomputer /JOINDOMAIN
NETDOM /Domain:mydomain MEMBER mycomputer /ADD
NETDOM /Domain:mydomain MEMBER mycomputer /DELETE
NETDOM MEMBER \\mycomputer /JOINWORKGROUP workgroupname
NETDOM member mycomputer /QUERY
make sure the clients all have the win2k dns server listed correctly
assuming you are using AD, have you tried adding the machines into AD users
and computers?
check the service pack level on the winnt workstations
