The instrument data (#9800-#987F) is read/write.
The other registers (#9880-#988F) are write only.

I used the read/write ability of the instrument data to make an SCC
autodetect routine. Only problem is that it doesn't work on most emulators.

If you want to know more about the SCC, mail me. Right now, I am digging
deep into Konami's replayer routines.
