In this newsgroup message, German Diaz/Roko Sifredi says he put the
diskimage of Penguin Wars 2 online. So I downloaded it. It appeared to
be a single sided diskimage. I ran it with fMSX and it worked fine! But
ofcourse I want to use it on my real MSX. So I took a disk and put the
diskimage on the real disk on a SparcStation 5, with the following
method (that had always worked):
cat penwar2.360 > /dev/fd0
This seemed to work, because after a 'mdir' command I got the files:
AUTOEXEC.BAS LOADER.BIN and PENGWAR2.2Mb (or something)
So this is a cracked conversion by Martos, who put the game on sector
with a little loader.

But when I got home, tried to run it on my MSX. Result: Line Buffer
overflow! After examining the disk with DISKVIEW, I found out that the
FAT and directory were ok, and the disk was indeed Single Sided. But the
other info on the disk was totally corrupted! There wasn't a basic
program at all on the disk! Just garbage!

Then I tried to compress the diskimage to XSA format and, with F2D.COM
put it on disk on my real MSX. F2D reported (I used a Single Sided
formatted disk): The disk in drive A: maybe a harddisk. Continue?
Ofcourse I continued. After F2D finished, I found that again the disk
contents was totally garbage, except for the FAT and the directory. BUt,
since I won't give up that easy, I tried again on the same disk, after
FastFormatting it (on MSX). Results were the same. But then I tried it
AGAIN, without any formatting. This time I had more luck: the
AUTOEXEC.BAS and LOADER.BIN were succesfully put on the disk! After
ressetting my MSX the AUTOEXEC.BAS was loaded and LOADER.BIN was loaded.
After loading the game from the disk however, the screen became black
and some corrupted square appeared on the screen. The drive started
rattling and the MSX hung...

THEN I gave up!

Does anyone understand what went wrong here?
Why did the diskimage got corrupted on the real disk when using CAT?
(And why was the FAT and directory fine?)
Why did it only work after restoring the diskimage on the disk where I
had a previous attempt?
Why isn't the game working yet, but the diskimage seems to be fine on
the disk?
Why DOES it all work in an emulator without any problems?
