First check if there is a jumper on the drive called RY/DC , if there is put it on
DC
if it's not there you have to connect pin 34 to ground.
You can just short circuit it to pin 33 but it's better to cut the track on the
drive to pin 34 first.
This will normally work on most drives but some drives will go off-line if there
is no response
on the disk change signal (disk change reset)
It also depends on the software on your MSX , some really use the ready signal on
pin 34.
On a NMS8250 it works.
It's also advisable to close the HD switch permanently to avoid real problems when

using hd diskettes (you will keep some small problems)

If the motor will not spin or spins permanently  look for a jumper called Mon and
change it, but
this is only on very old drives.
