Reading of mapper registers is as far as I know a feature implemented by the
manufacturers.
DOS2 doesn't read the mapper registers because this is not allowed due to the MSX
standard.
The standard does not say that mapper register may be read.
If I'm right the turbo-R datapack from ASCII defines the mapper standard (I had this
datapack, but I
have sold it years ago). That says that you may write to these registers but reading
should not be
done. Instead, mapper pages should be backup up in RAM! (&c000-&hfff ofcourse).
As far as I know the only problem child with the mapper-page-read-back method is the
turbo-R...

hmmmm.... if this readback would be the standard, 4 bytes of data RAM would be saved,
even more
would be save because the opcodes to read them are shorter...
