Maybe the last number is a kind of CRC? In that case, it is only needed to
verify the number that is read, it is not really a part of the barcode
information.

You could encode character in numbers. A simple encoding is 2 digits that
store the index of the character in the alphabet (00 for A, 01 for B etc).
More complex encodings can be invented, so that you can store more
characters in a single barcode.
